About
THE GAVEL: BEGINNING
When the gavel falls, there are no appeals.
Hannah Mercer disappeared six months before the system recorded her death.
After escaping a powerful husband, she is hunted down, beaten, and left for dead. When the aftermath destroys what remains of her family, the narrative is rewritten. He is cleared. She is unstable. The case is closed.
Hannah survives — but legally, she no longer exists.
Under a new name, she rebuilds carefully. She studies the system that failed her and begins working inside it, supporting women who are told to wait, to document, to meet thresholds that violence rarely respects.
She believes in protection. In procedure. In process.
Until she sees what happens after the paperwork is complete.
Orders are denied. Risks are reframed. Harm is segmented into incidents that never quite qualify. Cases are resolved without being resolved at all.
When a woman she helped is returned to danger through perfectly correct decisions, Hannah understands something the system will not admit:
Failure is not accidental. It is structural.
What follows is not revenge.
It is precedent.
THE GAVEL: BEGINNING is the first novel in a dark, grounded thriller series about institutional design, invisible violence, and the quiet line between protection and consequence.
This is not the story of a woman who loses control.
It is the story of a woman who stops waiting for permission.
